The World of Stefan Zweig
The
World of
STEFAN
ZWEIG
Uptaking an author's world is very interesting experience that takes long by reading more than a book of him/her and unfortunatelly, i have never read one of Stefan Zweig's.
Luckly, i found an opportunity to meet him in a fair tale: The Grand Budapest. It is last work of Wes Anderson, dedicated and based on Stefan Zweig and his stories, respectively.
The story is going in a fictional Eastern Europen Country '' Zubrowka'' which is inspired by Prague. The movie starts with amazing a capella and see a memorial of '' The Author'', then he starts to tell the story.
The screenplay is represents Zweig by centering on 3 different characters: The Author, '0' Mustafa and Mr Gustave H. He creates a world to escape from the chaos is come in the period between two world war. Everything is as possible as pink and warm. It feels like falling in very fluffy and creamy birthday cake. However it is not at all, just as like the other Wes Anderson's movies.
Respectively, very dear Monsieur Gustave H., Agatha and Zero (0) Mustafa.
Let's talk about Wes Anderson style. He has very particular cinematic language likes to speak with that consist of proportion of scenes, engineering of screenplay and aiming ''bittersweet stories'' with irony.
The last ingredient is the key factor of his movies, especially for ''The Grand Budapest Hotel''. Even the story and scenes expressed like out of a fairy tale book, the audience will not slog figuring the sadness of Gustave H. by covering itself by a hotel looks like a candy. That is the reason why he turns so emotional after listen the real story of how and why Zero Mustafa come Zubrowka:
WAR
As you understand, our hero (Stefan Zweig=Gustave H.=The Author) hates war and he try to withstand against all horror and catastrophe by his naive and small utopia. After the first visit of train wagon of policemen,
he actually stops playing and says: oh, fuck it!... This naive gentleman who memorializes last time for the maid serge, while he is being chased by police.
After everything is ended, we expected everything is going to be much colourfull. Actually, inside of the hotel is, indeed.
However, The second train journey of our characters is black and white. See the difference:
'' I found this black uniform is drear. '' he said.
and...
Our hero, poet, artlover, flirtatious concierge is lost against ''ZZ Division'' and everything is
left to zero. He is actually a rock'n roll loser in this Grand Budapest Hotel universe, further
''the chef of the mental hospital''. Without a chef or with a lower quality concierge, the
hotel ( or The World) seems like an asylum as you can realize from one of the first
appearances of the interior of the hotel.
Very genuine and naive messages by Wes Anderson. This is his language and this movie rises and shines the world of Stefan Zweig. He flights to many cities in Europe. After refugee years from Nazis, he could not run away from depression of war.
Zweig finds the eternal escape:
suicide.
As Mr. Mustafa mentioned, his world had past very long time ago, however, he
played as opposite very successfully. Even in the jail, he makes mornings very beautiful
with his energy, his breakfast services, his gifts from Mend'l to new friends...
be smart to save naivety
